Mixing a St. Patrick’s Day Cocktail That Actually Tastes Good
Last month I claimed that Valentine’s Day was the official holiday of bad cocktails. I may have been premature in my conclusion, as St. Patrick’s Day gives it a run for the money. A pint of Guinness, a slug of Irish whiskey, or an Irish Coffee — noble options all. But the festivities have long demanded that the drinks being served be green. With beer, this has entailed nothing more (nor less, for that matter) objectionable than the addition of food coloring. But when it comes to cocktails, the holiday color imperative has been met by resorting to green liqueurs, with results that range from dubious to disgusting.
I’m in agreement here. My St. Patrick’s drink? A Guinness. If I’m in the mood for a cocktail I’ll have a Tipperary or just stick with my standard cocktails without a need to “theme” my evening.
